Loved your 12th para and the first line of the last para.
I’ve been thinking (but not yet blogging) along these lines for a while, linked to increasing numbers of enquiries asking for “all the high resolution photos on DVD”
I can shoot 1200 photos at a wedding. They’re not all competition winners. From the standpoint of my reputation, they’re not all pictures I’m prepared to release “into the wild”, to borrow a phrase from computer virus jargon. It’s one of the drawbacks of documentary photography that all wedding photographers are human, and sometimes Cartier-Bresson’s “decisive moment” is realised as a less than flattering shot of the bride and her mother. Oh, and I’ll take multiple shots of each group portrait so that I get one shot where all the guests have their eyes open and looking at the camera.
So I like to edit. And edit. And edit again, until I think I’ve distilled the essence of each wedding.
That’s in the ideal world. In the real world, if I explain all this (and more, long blog article to follow) and the clients still want all the high resolution photos, well, the customer’s always right!
